Acupuncture is an ancient part of traditional Chinese medicine developed over many centuries to allow the treatment of conditions and disorders associated with the nervous and vascular systems.
Mr Binning Qin is glad to be in New Zealand and has recently brought his extensive experience in acupuncture and Tui Na massage procedures to the Victoria Clinic in Victoria St.
Mr Qin, 36, began his training at Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2001. He spent six years earning a bachelor’s degree and a further three years gaining a master’s degree. While studying he would often add to his experience working in the local acupuncture and massage clinic.
He also took part in research and worked as a subeditor on three textbooks associated with acupuncture in traditional Chinese medicine.
After his studies he continued to work in the clinic before being selected from more than 30 applicants to return to his university to teach, sharing his time between teaching and practice. In 2013 Mr Qin took the opportunity to travel and spent three years in Europe. He practiced in a Chinese medicine clinic in Innsbruck, Austria, then worked in Luxembourg, then Switzerland.
''I did a lot of work in the relief of chronic pain. A lot of people take painkillers but that can hurt the stomach. Acupuncture and massage can provide a drug-free alternative.''
Recently Mr Qin had the opportunity to come to New Zealand and take over the acupuncture clinic at the Victoria Clinic from a former classmate who had returned to China.
Having worked in a variety of nations and seen how their health systems operate, Mr Qin said New Zealand was very lucky to have a national insurance system like ACC.
''In many other countries the level of care you receive comes down to how much money you have. There is always the need to treat people as fast as possible to make money. So it is not always possible to spend as much time with a patient as they really need. In New Zealand, for a small surcharge, you can receive excellent acupuncture and Tui na massage treatment.''
Conditions that can be treated with traditional Chinese Medicine include back pain, neck pain, sciatica, arthritis, cervical spondylosis, sequelae of apoplexy, respiratory conditions, sinusitis, hay fever, asthma, bronchitis, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and women's health, neurological conditions including migraines, headaches and tinnitus, metabolic disorders including stress, anxiety and smoking, and drug addiction and miscellaneous conditions including skin disorders and sports performance and enhancement.
